Third Annual St Andrews Kangeiko

On 2nd January, we met with kendo friends from Edinburgh and Glasgow to start the new year in style by training on the beach. It was the third event of this kind and we can safely say that we have established a tradition, which is known and admired in British kendo circles. Although there might be a hint of incredulity blended with the admiration expressed by some kendoka. Outdoors training in potentially adverse circumstances takes you out of your comfort zone, as the most routine moves - especially footwork - seem to become unusually difficult endeavours. In this sense, our kangeiko not only fun but also a learning experience.

This year, the weather was surprisingly favourable and the absence of wind and rain made training and sparring a bit easier than expected. The session was led by Steve Bishop sensei, 5th dan, and Gerry Kincaid sensei, 5th dan. Michael Gratzke, 2nd dan, from St Andrews Kendo Club acted as sempai (senior student).

It seemed that this time around fewer people went into the surf but those who did, enjoyed it immensely. The sand on the beach was wet and quite compacted which allowed for some spirited fights.

After the kangeiko, we retired to the pub feeling cold but content.
